Before the First Storm: Check These 4

You’ve made a plan, built a kit, found your sandbag site, and signed up for SMC Alert. Before the first storm reaches the Southcoast and South Skyline areas, CHECK these 4 while the skies are clear:

  • FLOOD INSURANCE: Standard homeowner and renter policies don’t cover flood, and new flood policies usually take 30 days to start. Start by Oct 25 to be covered for the Nov 24 King Tides. Free guidance at uphelp.org.
  • TIRES: Gas or electric, worn tread loses its grip on wet roads. Measure your tread, replace worn out wiper blades, and confirm your auto policy includes comprehensive coverage, which usually covers flood damage.
  • GUTTERS, DRAINS, AND DEBRIS: Flooding often starts where leaves and trash pile up. Clear your own, then gather neighbors to clear your street and school.
  • TREES: Have a certified arborist check large trees while it’s dry. Renting? Ask your property manager to arrange it.
